Versatile, powerful, engaging, and enlivening, Shanta Bunmi (BoomEE) Jasper is a native of Richmond, Virginia. Spending time listening and writing down the lyrics of all the artists she loved was her leisure since childhood. She learned the nuances of the legends in soul, jazz, funk and pop music: Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Michael Jackson, Anita Baker, Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, James Brown, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn.... This, along with her die-hard love for hip-hop as well as African and Caribbean music and culture, frames her unique style and rhythmic delivery.
Bunmi’s professional career began while a student at James Madison University. Participating in a number of talent showcases, including MasterCard Acts, where her group won the national semi-finals. She met Nate Smith - a drummer and pianist – and John Gordon a phenomenal vocalist and formed the R&B group Ascension. For the next eight years the group would perform in venues and showcases up and down the east coast. The group’s LP “Naked Soul” achieved regional radio airplay and received favorable reviews in U.S. and U.K. publications. As their lives took different directions, Bunmi began working on her solo career and performing with cover bands. Her expansive song repertoire and skill as an entertainer established her reputation as a go to vocalist. Currently she performs with East Coast Entertainment band J. Tucker and The Krewe and continues to sit in with other popular cover bands including Dance Candy and Soul Expressions.
As a solo artist, Bunmi's first solo project "Life and Soul" was received internationally with rave reviews. Echoes Magazine (UK) listed the album as a top Indie Soul release. She has performed her music at festivals and on concert stages having the humbling experience of opening for Chaka Kahn, Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Musiq Soulchild, Najee, Angela Bofil, A Tribe Called Quest, Jonathan Butler, Cameo and Wayman Tisdale. Bunmi's contralto and full vocal quality has been likened to artists such as Phyllis Hyman, Lalah Hathaway, Cassandra Wilson, Nina Simone, and India.Arie.
Continuing to move audiences with her voice, energy and passion for elevating the soul through music, Bunmi is also a mom, graphic/web designer, and communications consultant. Her life expression is through the paradigm of African (Yoruba) tradition and her artistic expression comes also as a dancer performing professionally for almost 20 years as a member of Ezibu Muntu African Dance Company (Richmond, VA) and later Giwayen Mata (Atlanta, GA).
In every joy and every heartbreak, every beautiful sight or contemplative moment – the experiences of life are her inspiration. "The lessons that help us to grow are in the details – our morality, our character, our intentions, our positions, our good and bad qualities, strengths and weaknesses, the challenges we face.” Through her words, melodies and harmonies she hopes to be thought provoking, enlightening, spread love and joy, and add to the soundtrack of life.
